Leprosy Car
Leprosy Car by Ans Verdijk in the ice cell of the garden house, Marres.
After many locations, the Leprosy Car has finally found a place where it is completely in its place: in an ice cell in the garden house of the former 18th-century villa of the Marres family, now the contemporary art centre Marres in Maastricht.
About The Leprosy Car: This is inspired by the leprosy garments of the sick in the Middle Ages. These sick people wore black cloaks and rang a bell to indicate that people had to keep their distance.
My Leprosy Car is a translation of how an artist is seen in our world.
The installation consists of a deep black car with different gradations and types of strips of fabric. Inside, the artist stands with self-defense shoes, closed off in his own space, looking through a visor at the world. A bell in the pointed cap makes a sound, while clumsy wheels barely allow the car to move forward. The car can be moved by a push bar.
